This is a broad, hands-on role suited to a strong finance professional who enjoys working in an SME environment and wants to take real ownership within a busy, project-led business. The successful candidate will work closely with senior management and will play a key role in overseeing the day-to-day finance function, strengthening reporting and controls, and supporting the wider business with accurate financial information and commercial insight.
Key responsibilities
- Oversee the day-to-day running of the finance function
- Prepare monthly management accounts and reporting packs
- Lead budgeting, forecasting and cashflow management
- Manage month-end and year-end close processes
- Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and general ledger activities
- Ensure accuracy across reconciliations, accruals, prepayments and journals
- Monitor project-related costs, margins and financial performance
- Support the business with cashflow planning and working capital management
- Ensure RCT, VAT, PAYE, Corporation Tax and other statutory obligations are met
- Liaise with external auditors, accountants, advisors and banking contacts
- Review and improve finance processes, controls and reporting structures
- Support senior leadership with financial analysis and commercial decision-making
- Assist with systems improvements and drive efficiencies across the finance function
- Manage and support junior finance or administrative staff where required
Requirements
- Qualified accountant with strong all-round finance experience
- Previous experience in a Finance Manager, Financial Controller or similar role
- Strong experience preparing management accounts, budgets and cashflow forecasts
- Comfortable working in a hands-on, fast-paced SME environment
- Strong systems and Excel skills
- Excellent attention to detail and strong organisational skills
- Construction, engineering or contractor experience would be a strong advantage
- Experience in project-led businesses, cost control or operational finance would be beneficial
